Philadelphia High Back
Comb Back full view

The Philadelphia High Back chair was first made in the Philadelphia area around 1740. Rather than a bow, like the sack back, this chair has a steam-bent crest.

-On the ends of the crest are ears with carved volutes.
-The arm is sawn, rather than bent, and includes a crest.
-The hands have nicely carved knuckles.
-The leg turnings are shaped in blunt arrow style.
-Like the NYC and C-arm, it has a shield seat.

Carved knuckles of the Philadelphia High Back
Because of its formal look, especially when painted black, I have heard the Philadelphia High Back called a "Windsor with a Tuxedo."
The thin, curvy seat of the Philadelphia is modern even today
