Sack Back originated in Philadelphia and was most popular from 1760-1780,
as seen in the preserved Independence Hall pictured below. The story behind
its name is that the owners would hang a sack made from decorative cloth
on the chair's back during cold weather to prevent drafts. Hence the name
"sack back." |
